Objective. Determine the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among sex workers in the area controlled Health 4 Yanuncay, Canton Cuenca.
Material and methods. With a cross-sectional design and a 6-month period were interviewed 238 sex workers in which information was collected : age, education , residence, individual characteristics of the study population and conditions associated with STIs.
Results. STI prevalence was 52.5 %, 47.5 % for fungal infections and 9.2 % for bacterial infections. The average age for the sample was 26.3 ± 6.5 years and for 80 % it was 23.7 ± 3.7 years. Secondary education was predominant ( 48.7 %). 85.7 % of respondents living in urban areas. 62.8 % have a regular partner and 84 % more than a couple. 81.6% of them are mothers and 42.3 % has 2 children. 73.7% of sex workers has 2 pairs and 16.5 % more than two partners. Estimated 51.1 % earn less than USD 1000, but 42.1 % said that between 1000 and 3000 USD. 6.8% of them believed that their income exceeds USD 3000 per month.
The condition was significantly associated with higher prevalence of STIs was having more than one sexual partner RP 2.05 (95% CI: 1.09 to 4.52) (P = 0.046). Other associations were not significant: alcohol or other drugs (cocaine, marijuana) (OR 2.19 , 95% CI 0.49 to 11.0), the instruction have not (OR 1.55 , 95% CI 0.7 to 3.49) and living in urban areas (OR 1.29 , 95% CI 0.59 to 2.84 , and having higher income (OR 1.02, 95% CI: 0.59 to 1,76) .
Discussion. Sex workers remain the most vulnerable to infection and transmission of venereal disease called population. For additional efforts invested in the field of prophylaxis all that has been achieved is to reduce the prevalence and incidence in turn. In countries with poor economy and developing the prevalence tends to increase.
