The main objective of this research was to correlate emotional intelligence levels, communication styles, communication, a couple relationships at their beginning stage, the faculty of Psychology at the University of Cuenca. The applied methodology was a quantitative approach, with a non-experimental design of correlational scope. The sample that participated were students from third to seventh cycle of clinical, social and educational careers. The sample number was 189 people, 80 men and 109 women between 20 and 30 years of age, who maintain a relationship at the time of application of the scales. The instruments used were a sociodemographic record, the TMMS-24 and the Inventory communication styles. The TMMS-24 measures 3 constructs: attention, clarity and repair. On the other hand, the inventory of communication styles has two classifications, I POSITIVE and I NEGATIVE. See the descriptive statistics and the Spearman correlation to obtain the results; the most relevant were that a high percentage of participants (76.2%) have adequate levels of emotional intelligence, which directly influence the communication styles used. In the same way, 71.8% use positive styles to communicate with their partner. In conclusion, emotional intelligence and communication influence the interactions of the couple and can be a protective factor for the satisfaction of the same.
