In psychological sciences, the addressed constructs are non-observable; therefore,
their measurement or quantification difficult and compromises their validity. The purpose of
this research was to perform an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis of the Identity
Distress Scale in students of the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Cuenca, between
17 and 26 years old. The study had a quantitative approach, the design was non-experimental,
and the scope was correlational. For the analysis, a database of 400 respondents was used,
collected in the academic period 2018 - 2019; the extraction of a sample was considered;
however, since it did not meet the number of cases necessary for factor analysis, we worked
with the entire population of students. The results of the exploratory and confirmatory factor
analysis show that the scale functions as a single factor model which presents adequate
goodness of fit. We conclude that identity distress measured with IDS is one-dimensional
and shows evidence of construct validity, suggesting that the scale can be used in the
Ecuadorian context
