Resumen
Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 422 million adults have diabetes; consequently, the WHO is promoting the adoption of preventive and therapeutic measures, as well as the control of complications (1).
The interactions of drugs with food and medicinal plants not only interfere with the use of nutrients and the effect of the drugs; they can additionally alter the nutritional status of the patient (2) Objective: to synthesize the scientific evidence on the clinically relevant aspects of drug-nutrient and drug medicinal plant interactions in the pharmacological treatment of diabetes with insulin. Methodology: A qualitative systematic review of articles of primary origin was developed on the reported interactions between insulin with nutrients and/or with medicinal plants.
Results: Executing the search equations designed for this study, 1,009 articles were found, of which two were selected, using the inclusion criteria. In the first, the absence of drug-medicinal plant interaction was reported, while in the second, the drug-nutrient interaction of the pharmacokinetic type at the absorption level was reported.
Conclusions: The present qualitative systematic review reports the absence of interaction between insulin and guar gum, and also reports the pharmacokinetic interaction between insulin and nutrients in a standard diet. This knowledge will guide the correct combination and administration of the medication in order to achieve optimal therapeutic results.
