Resumen
The Neomalthusian theory points out that the excess population in a certain territory
decreases the quality of life of its inhabitants, as well as generates an impact on the
environment. For this reason, this theory provides us with a series of techniques and tools in
the analysis to find, analyze and contrast the main data collected on the urban and population
growth of the city of Cuenca from 1950 to 2010. In other words, it seeks the unprecedented
application of the theory in the city to determine if it is overpopulated. In this sense, the study
area is considered to be the Cuenca canton, with emphasis on its urban part.
As a result of the analysis, according to theory, Cuenca exceeded its population carrying
capacity, that is, it is overpopulated. This can be corroborated both by the analysis of the data
as well as by the causality of historical events in Cuenca in the indicated period. For this reason,
some recommendations are suggested that can motivate the awareness of Cuenca society on
these issues to understand the consequences of urban and population growth.
