Resumen
Background: postpartum depression is a public health problem with a variable
prevalence and various risk factors associated with family dysfunction and
intrafamilial violence.
Objective: To determine the association between postpartum depression and
adverse family determinants.
Methodology: a systematic review; 20 analytic international studies were
included after reading the titles and abstracts based on the specified domains
and STROBE criteria in English and Spanish from January 2015 to December
2020. The search was carried out in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and
ScienceDirect; using health sciences descriptors (DeCS) and Boolean operators
(Y, AND; NO, NOT and O, OR). Data was compiled according to author, year,
country, population, exposure, type of study, and analysis. Information was
synthesized in personalized tables.
Results: prevalence of postpartum depression ranged widely (3.30% - 35.20%)
according to the geographical area; 17 out of 18 studies established an
association between postpartum depression and any kind of intrafamilial violence
(p≤0.05). Three studies demonstrated links between postpartum depression and
family dysfunction (p≤0.05).
Conclusions: the variability in the prevalence of postpartum depression concurs
with other studies, family dysfunction and intrafamilial violence in its different
forms of exercise may be precipitant factors of postpartum depression.
Limitations: restrictions regarding access to original articles due to fees, lack of
local studies with adequate methodology. Most of the reviewed studies belong to
regions outside Latin America and could hardly be correlated to the local
population.
