General Objective: To determine the frequency of abortion and sociodemographic characteristics associated to patients treated at the Hospital Homero Castanier Crespo from January to December 2013.
Methodology: Descriptive, observational and retrospective study conducted at Homero Hospital Castanier Crespo in the City of Azogues and its Emergency and Obstetrics - Gynecology Department; all medical records of patients seen by abortion during the period January 2013 to December 2013 were reviewed, the following variables were collected: age, residence, marital status, education, religion, obstetric characteristics, type of abortion and contraception; the information was processed through a database developed and codified in SPSS version 19.
Results: The frequency of abortion was 6.91%, representing 201 cases; being more frequent in the population aged 20-29 years with 43.8% with a mean age of 25.65 years; urban residence 59.7%; secondary instruction 43.3%; catholic religion 90% and married civil state 48.8%; the following associated pathologies were presented: UTI 25.9% and Vaginosis 6%. The obstetric characteristics were as follows: 2-4 deeds 63,2%; 2 or fewer births 74,1%; one abortions antecedent 81,6%; no history of previous cesarean 80.1%. The most common type of abortion was the incomplete 52, 2% followed by 34.8% of retained and referred abortion.
Conclusions: The prevalence of abortion is high at Homero Castanier Crespo Hospital and its characterization is not different from that reported in the literature.
