Resumen
Background: the prevalence of Acantosis Nigricans varies significantly, depending
on age, ethnicity, skin type, degree of obesity and concomitant diseases, such as
endocrinopathies.
Objective: determine the prevalence of Acantosis Nigricans and associated factors in
the adult Saraguro population in 2019.
Method and Materials: a sample of 170 adults aged 20 to 64 from the canton
Saraguro, Loja province, was investigated in 2019. A cross-sectional, descriptive
observational study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Acantosis Nigricans
and the associated factors. Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS version 21,
including central trend measures, frequencies and percentages; as well as, chi squared
and confidence interval and p-value <0.05 to determine associations.
Results: 68.8% were in the adult age group; predominantly female (65.9%); mixedrace
(65.3%), with full primary education at 35.9%. The prevalence of Acantosis
Nigricans in the adult population of Saraguro was 87.1%. Overweight is the main
associated factor for presenting Acantosis Nigricans (IC95%: 1.1 – 1.3; p value <
0.05).
Conclusion: the overweight was an associated factor for Acantosis Nigricans in the
population of Saraguro from 20 to 64 years old.
