Resumen
The tobacco consumption in the population is considered a health issue that is related to the oxidative stress in the lipidic peroxidation, therefore, malondialdehyde MDA is considered as a biomarker in individuals with smoking habits, in this work, the seric concentration of MDA of smokers and non-smokers was valued.70 students from the faculty of Biochemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Cuenca took part, divided into two groups, 50 in the exposed group (smokers) and 20 in the control group (non-smokers).
The commercial kit OxiSelec TBARS Assay kit (MDA Quantitation),was used in the serum MDA determination, colorimetric detection; the demographic and epidemiological characteristics of each student was assessed through a survey. The results from the smokers group were compared to the control group (non-smokers).
The MDA level results (umol/L) showed a statistically significant increase (p <0.001) in smoker students (10.74 ± 3.17) respect to the non-smokers (3.52 ± 1.11). Additionally, an analysis of the variation of the concentration of MDA regarding to the number of cigarettes / day and the time of the habit of smoking, was made, which showed a correlation lineal significant and high (r = 0, 875 and r = 0, 848, respectively); in relation to the access time to the first cigarette a day showed a positive linear trend(r = 0.476). So, the MDA serum concentration is significantly correlated to the oxidative stress level in the smoker students.
