Abstract

Background: Hip fractures have a high mortality on elderly people it is estimated between 12% and 41% six months after cirugy, depending on the associated risk factors. Objective: To determine the frequency of postoperative complications in the elderly with hip fracture in the surgery area of the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital in the city of Cuenca in the period from May 2015 to July 2016. Methodology: This was a quantitative, observational, descriptive retrospective study. The research was based on the review of clinical records and the database of surgery and external consultation area of the Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, from the period from May 2015 to July 2016, the collection of data using an elaborate form the purpose; The data were entered in an SPSS database where percentages, frequencies and chi squared were obtained. Results: The highest prevalence was gender Female with 62% of cases, the prevalence of hip fracture in our study was 44% of cases of intertrochanteric fracture which represent the 55% of cases. Diabetes type 1 and hypertension were the factors most associated with complications. Conclusions: The prevalence of hip fractures in the elderly is high, factors associated in patients with hip fracture have a direct relationship with the development of complications following surgery
