Background: the clasic Neuropatology holds that the low cerebral volumen happends for the decrease in number and neuron´s size, the cerebral atrophy is in fact the result of ageing also n neurodegenerativ´s desease.
General Objective: to determine the prevalence, risk factors and tomographics findings of cerebral atrophy in old men, Imagenology department, Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital, January – June, Cuenca, 2013.
Metodology: Cort sectional, descriptive study, in the Imagenology department in HVCM. The universe of this study was 336 patients, clinical histories and tomographies reports in 2013. Data was collected by the own authors about general information, the cerebral atropy was identified by a radiologist medical report.
Results: the top age was 73,13 years with SD of 7,15, in gender, the men were more frequent with 53%, in residence 65,8% lived in rural area, 53% of the patients show cerebral atrophy. The risk factor´s prevalence was: arterial hypertension 25,6%, PR 0,8 (0,6 – 1,1); alcoholism 8,3%, PR 1,08 (0,7 – 1,5); cardiac disease 6,8%, PR 1,07 (0,7 – 1,5); diabetes 17,5%, PR 0,6 (0,4 – 0,9); and cerebrovascular disease 7,4%, PR 1,9 (1,6 – 2,2).
Conclusion: the cerebral atrophy in our town is higher and it is associated with age and history of cerebrovascular disease.
