Resumen
The purpose of this study is to set up a design and modelling guide for lead rubber bearing seismic isolators to mitigate damage produced by seismic motion to traditionally designed structures. The idea was to introduce a system that isolates the building from seismic hazard by decoupling it from the ground. This system is to dissipate energy incoming from seismic motion providing a better behavior of the structure compare to those traditionally designed. The design criteria is based on formulation of static analysis, and modelling procedures by using finite element software such as Etabs 2015. The building with the implemented isolation system will be submitted to ground motion corresponding to the latest earthquake occurred in Ecuador on April 16th, 2016 on the worst direction for evaluation purposes. It is shown that seismic isolation contributes to a better behavior of traditionally designed structures in matters of energy dissipation occurring essentially at the isolation system, interstory drift reduction, and damage overall.
