Background: contraception is usually carried out by the couple, due to the sociocultural characteristics of the country, this reality has been increasing, with the simple fact of the greater demand for planning methods; according to the BBC and a UN World Report the ratio of vasectomy / tubectomy in developed countries is 5.3% to 8.4% and in developing countries it is 1.9% to 20.6% (1).
General objective: To determine the knowledge and beliefs about vasectomy in external consultation users, "Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso" Cuenca, 2017
Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional study was carried out at the outpatient clinic of the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital, with a sample of 116 male patients between 18 and 50 years of age; to whom a modified Mexican questionnaire was applied, the information collected was tabulated and processed in the statistical package SPSS version 23, and the results were finally presented in tables and graphs of frequency.
Results: Patients had a mean age of 30 ± 8 years, single (37.9%), with a secondary education (44.8%), the Catholic religion was the most prevalent (77.6%) and most has a son; 42.2% mentions the right time to use a condom, and opinions are divided over the purpose of sperm; 33.6% of patients believe that the vasectomy generates side effects and that it can affect in some way their sexual condition, thus 29.3% of patients believe to be impotent; 25% think that this procedure can affect erection, ejaculation and orgasm; the majority point out that the age to perform the vasectomy is when the couple has parity satisfied (38.8%).
Conclusions: 77.6% of patients have basic knowledge about vasectomy, 33.6% of patients believe that vasectomy generates side effects and that may affect their sexual condition in some way
