Family factors related to the initial substance use in drug-dependent patients of Cuenca, was explored by a quantitative study. Individual questionnaires were applied to patients hospitalized in therapeutic communities. Fifty-two patients between eighteen to thirty-five years old with a DSM-V diagnosis of substance-related and addictive disorders participate in the survey. The substance use was described from family factors. The parental figure is transcendental, they generate attitudes of consumption and aggressive behaviors manifested at the moment of intake of substances. Factors as the imposition of limits and norms using mechanisms guided by violence; the substance consumption of any member in the family, in particular the paternal figure; and the disengaged perception of the emotional bond is a result of a first contact with any substance occurs in the adolescence. The nuclear family predominates as the main typology in this study. Adolescent consumer is negatively affect by curiosity and feeling of acceptance in their peer group, as well as an emotional grief.
