dc.description.abstractBackground The combination of drugs with food and drugs with herbs could generate beneficial or toxic side effects for the patients. Warfarin is an anticoagulant and vitamin K is a cofactor that favors coagulation. When administered together they antagonize each other. For example, foods rich in vitamin K and warfarin generate a drug-food interaction, inhibiting its action. Aims:To compile and analyze clinically relevant scientific information on drug-food or drug-herbs interactions in the pharmacological treatment with warfarin as an antithrombotic agent. Methodology: Systematic review of studies on drug-nutrient and drug-herbs interactions in the pharmacological treatment with warfarin as an antithrombotic agent. Results: 1.539 articles were obtained according to the search criteria in three databases, after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, eight studies were included for further review and analysis. Conclusions: GRADE and Briggs criteria were applied for quality evaluation of these articles. The joint administration of food and herbs with warfarin does not generate drug interaction in most of the cases. However, there are important exceptions in which synergism or antagonism can occur.
