Materials and methods: A descriptive and retrospective study was carried out in patients admitted with a diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis to the surgery department of the mentioned hospital, during the period November 2014 to April 2015. These patients underwent open appendectomy and antibiotic prophylaxis with cefazolin administered preop-eratively. The clinical data of the histories found in the department of medical records were used. Results: Out of the 132 patients evaluated, 53% (n=70) were female, the most frequent age group was 12-20 years (43.2%; n=57), the urban origin was the most frequent (56.1%; n=74), the catarrhal phase was the most common found in the transoperative period (52.3%; n=69), only 27.3%; n=36 presented infection of the operative site and the time interval between 30-60 minutes was the most common for the administration of antibiotic prophylaxis. Conclusion: The post appendectomy patients from the Hospital Homero Castanier Crespo in Azogues, Ecuador; showed similar clinical characteristics to previous reports, but despite receiving antibiotic prophylaxis they presented a high frequency of infection of the operative site. © 2019, Sociedad Venezolana de Farmacologia y de Farmacologia Clinica y Terapeutica.
