Resumen
One of the main challenges of intermediate cities in the
21st century is the increase of motorized vehicles and
the serious consequences in environmental pollution,
health and the number of deaths and injuries due to
accidents. Given this, it has been shown that active
mobility, mainly by bicycle, is a simple, effective and
economic strategy to solve mobility problems and
improve the health of people. Cuenca has created an
infrastructure for bicycle mobility, however, it has
problems with connectivity, location and design, so it
is ineffective and risky.
The objective of this degree work is to propose
guidelines for the design of a bike path on Yanahurco
Avenue, as a strategy for the integral improvement of
public space. This avenue is an important axis of flow of
movement in Totoracocha, east of the city of Cuenca.
For the design, local and international design guides
and methodologies were searched, adapting them
to the local context, applying them in three sections
of the avenue. Yanahurco Avenue was evaluated
using the “London Cycling Design Standards”
methodology, which includes parameters of safety,
comfort, adaptability, directness and aesthetics. The
rating of the current situation of the avenue was 17/64
and after applying the design guidelines it obtained
53/64. In the proposal, the avenue went from having
defective roads, with obstacles and scarce vegetation,
to having a sidewalk with a strip of circulation and
another with furniture and vegetation. Pedestrian
and cyclist crossings are safe and people with reduced
mobility can move around unimpeded.
