Introduction: Studies on diagnostic stability determine the constancy of a psychiatric diagnosis of a patient in his continuous evaluations. Due to several factors, the diagnosis of a mental illness becomes difficult and changes, affecting the well-being of the patient and his family.
Objective: To determine the stability in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders in patients who re-entered at the Hospital Humberto Ugalde Camacho during the years 2015-2016.
Materials and method: It was a quantitative descriptive study; the universe consisted of 111 patients with psychiatric diagnoses. The data of clinical histories was collected; and through the prospective and retrospective consistency the diagnostic stability was determined. The information was tabulated using Microsoft Excel 2013 and SPSS 15.0. Tables were used for data analysis.
Results: The age range was from 18 to 84 years; with an average of 48 years; there was predominance of the male sex; the majority of patients were single; in schooling it was observed that 23.42% have incomplete secondary education, and the same percentage has complete secondary education. Twenty-nine disorders were diagnosed at first admission, the most frequent being paranoid schizophrenia 15.32%; 21 disorders were found in the last admissions, the most frequent was the mood disorder due to medical illness with mixed characteristics 18.92%.
Conclusions: The majority of patients presented diagnostic variability 64.86%; and only 35.14% showed stability in the initial diagnosis.
