The excessive consumption of ETOH in society mainly in the young adult, is considered a public health problem, because it has a high impact on health due to their negative consequences, mainly metabolic alterations at the level of the liver; as well as by changes in the personality that causes, leading to problems with both family members as in the social environment. In this not experimental study, of cases and controls, descriptive; was determined levels of NH4+ in blood as a biological marker of liver damage in 30 chronic alcoholic patients of "CRA" of the city of Cuenca, with respect to a control group corresponding to 30 students abstemious of ETOH of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences of the University of Cuenca, through the microdiffusion method of Gilardoni and technique colorimetric of uremia. The statistical analysis was worked with a confidence level of 95% and α of 0.05. It was found a significant variation between the concentrations of NH4+ in blood of the study population with respect to the control group with a value of P<0.001, as well as between the concentrations at the beginning and at the end of the detoxification treatment of the study population with a value of p<0.001 and a significant association between the variable amount of intake with the high concentration of NH4+.
