Resumen
Focused from urban anthropology, the thesis The Vado, heritage and politics of memory
develops the tradition, social imaginary, cultural and political concepts of the memory of the
El Vado neighborhood, of the city of Cuenca - Ecuador, through testimonies delivered by the
ancient inhabitants of the neighborhood community who share experiences of identity
elements, part of the heritage and inheritance.
The research reveals the trend towards innovation in the uses of the historical fabric of the city
and emblematic neighborhoods, based on the analysis of the genealogy of the neighborhood
and its lifestyles, to approximate the present, to the continuities / discontinuities between the
historical account and the identity nature of urban culture and the relationship of its territory
to the city context. It deals with heritage as a hegemonic memorization that discovers its role
in the face of political decisions, focusing the study on the politics of memory and examining
the way in which the heritage narrative is redefined according to particular interests that
generate tensions between memory and processes of patrimonialization that the official
rehearses, all reflections that could contribute to the management of heritage and public
policies.
