wanted-tocono had severe astigmatism and the degree of incipient keratoconus Background: Keratoconus is an eye problem that occurs in early adulthood, it is usually bilateral and affects both sexes equally. It represents the leading cause of corneal transplantation in developed countries. In Ecuador there is little evidence of this disease.
Objective: To establish the diagnosis and characteristics of keratoconus in pa-tients with astigmatism greater than 1 diopter (D) by corneal topography in the outpatient department of ophthalmology at St. Agnes Hospital in Cuenca.

Data were collected Surveyor "Atlas 9000" and using the SPSS version 20 pro-gram data analysis was performed.
For diagnostic criteria modified Rabinowitz and McDonnell were used, and for classification purposes, the keratometric criteria were used.
Results: The frequency of keratoconus was 28.6%, 53.1% were hom-bres and 46.9% women, was bilateral in 56.3% of cases. The most affected age group was 20 to 39 years. 75% of patients was the predominant with 46.9%.
