Resumen
Introduction: Overweight and obesity are associated with multiple conditions and
factors that directly affect people's health. Obesity is a major and independent risk
factor for the development of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. High
blood pressure known as the silent killer contributes to the development of
cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and premature mortality.
Methodology: an observational, descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with
a sample of 173 adult patients attended in the outpatient clinic of the Vicente Corral
Moscoso Hospital during 2019. The data were collected using a data form according
to the sociodemographic variables, nutritional status, abdominal waist and blood
pressure. The data was analyzed with the SPSS v.15 program using descriptive
statistics. The study was approved by an Ethics Committee.
Results: the most frequent age was 45-64 years 38.2%, with a predominance of
women 64.2%. Diabetes 32.4% was the most frequent comorbidity. 29.5% were
overweight and 43.9% were obese. There were 35.8% of patients with grade 1
hypertension and 11.0% with grade 2 hypertension. Hypertension was more frequent
in overweight and obese patients. A statistically significant association was found with
age p = 0.007.
Conclusions: the frequency of hypertensive patients is higher among those who are
overweight and obese.
