Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has presented the highest morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is the third leading cause of death in the world, and it is considered that it will increase in the coming years according to statistical data from the World Health Organization (WHO); because it is characterized by a restriction of airflow, thus affecting the quality of life of these patients (1).
Objective: To determine the quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the Homero Castanier Crespo Hospital, January 2016 - January 2019.
Methodology: quantitative observational, descriptive, retrospective study, according to the patients who attended the Hospital Homero Castanier Crespo, the sample was taken from the internal records of the institution, the information was collected using the form, then tables were made for statistical analysis using SPSS 15.0 software.
Results: Of the 72 participants diagnosed with COPD, 52.8% were women and 47.2% men; the average age of the persons was 81.8 years. With the application of the questionnaire, a decrease in the quality of life in terms of general health was observed in relation to the time of diagnosis.
Conclusion: The data show that the more years of diagnosis, the greater the deterioration in their physical and emotional condition, causing their quality of life to decline; the longer the evolution of the pathology, the lower the quality of life.
