Resumen
This research proposes the design and implementation of a metallic drum for tanning leather of minor species, in the leather tannery laboratory of Animal Science Faculty (ANSCF) of Espoch, this project doesn’t have experimental treatments, but responds to a process design study; a comparison of the tanning leather of minor species was also made using chromium in 4 of them, and with another 4 tanned leather with tara tannins by applying a descriptive statistic. Once designed and constructed the metallic drum which was given the code BB-315, the tanning leather of minor species was conducted, reporting the best tension (3460.22 N/cm2), and percentage of elongation (69.00%), when tanning with chrome, while the best contraction temperature was achieved by using the vegetable tanning agent. The sensory evaluation determined that the best tact and fullness (4.80 points) is achieved by tanning with tara tannins, while the softness is the same when using tara tannins or chrome (3.60 points). The efficiency of the BB-315 drum was 88%, which is satisfactory. The cost of the equipment was about 2526 US dollars when compared with equipments especially from European continent which are the ones who build these equipments mostly; and when it was budgeted it had a reference of 5000 dollars. Therefore, it is appreciated that a considerable saving exists in the construction that leads to a progress of the tannery company, the moment to project it on an industrial scale.
