Resumen
The main objective of the research study was to formulate a mouthwash with antimicrobial properties as an alternative to commercially available products, which was made from hydroalcoholic extract of myrtle (Myrcianthes hallii) and cloves (Syzygium aromaticum); laurel sodium sulfate, glycerin, and peppermint. The study carried out was experimental. Therefore, the effectiveness of the product was determined by testing the presence or absence of secondary metabolites with therapeutic activity such as alkaloids, flavonoids, compounds phenolics, triterpenes, steroids, and tannins. Ten formulations were carried out until the ideal product was obtained, being selected the formulation that had the established standards in quality control; adequate organoleptic characteristics, in addition to testing physical and chemical properties such as the pH according to that required by the oral cavity, so that the microbiological analysis demonstrated the absence of pathogenic microorganisms being suitable for human use. As a result, a mouthwash with antimicrobial activity was obtained that helps to combat and prevent cavities, likewise decreases halitosis and reduces gingivitis. It was concluded that the hydroalcoholic extracts used in the elaboration of the mouthwash, possess antimicrobial activity, due to their natural properties, and are less aggressive to the environment. It is important to make the population aware of the excessive use of cosmetics that contain harmful chemicals for their health.
