Resumen
This research is carried out because the basic and physiochemical of clay minerals from the
Province of Chimborazo were characterized with the aim of proposing potential industrial
applications different from the traditional ones. For which, they were consolidated data provided by Mining Regulation and Control Agency (ARCOM) and the Geological – Mining –
Metallurgical Development and Research Corporation (CODIGEM) in an information matrix of
clay deposits in the province, of which They selected: Cacha, Licán, Chambo, Pallatanga and
Tanquis. It was carried out a basic characterization of color, touch sensation, consistency, texture, impurities, humidity, apparent density, carbonates and organic matter; followed by physicochemical analysis of mineralogical composition (XRD) X-ray Diffraction, chemical composition (XRF) X-ray Fluorescence, morphology and porosity (SEM) Scanning Electron Microscopy, surface chemistry (FTIR) Fourier – Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and thermal behavior (TGA) Thermogravimetric Analysis. Subsequently, a triangulation was carried out between the results of the characterization with respect to data from scientific publications of the databases Scholar Google, Science Direct and World of Knowledge determining similarity in mineral phase, chemical composition or mineralogical composition to identify possible nontraditional industrial applications. The study shows
the followin gpotential specific applications: removal of Cr(VI), removal of As (V), removal of Ni (II) and Cr (III), removal of (PO4)in aqueous solutions and industrial effluents; development of ceramic membranes, excipients for the pharmaceutical industry and possible use in drilling fluids. It is recommended to deepen specific studies for each location of the province, apply similar studies for the remaining provinces of Zone 3, and include other analyzes of rheological, mechanical, ceramic, and thermal type.
