Resumen
The objective of this research work was to evaluate the economic-financial impact caused by the devaluation of the Colombian Peso on the economy of Nueva Loja, Lago Agrio canton, Sucumbios province in 2016 period. The local economy suffered an important economic impact due to the crisis generated by the oil barrel price drop, which triggered the devaluation of the currency of countries such as Colombia, which depend on the price of the North American dollar, which in turn forces countries to devaluate their currency to become more competitive against the economies of industrialized countries. Descriptive statistical methods were used to process the data and for the construction of tables and graphs. Also, inferential statistical tests were performed for hypothesis testing. SPSS 19 statistical software was employed for information processing. The devaluation of the Colombian peso produced a 40% sales drop for the businesses stablished in Nueva Loja, due to higher prices compared to those found in Colombia for similar goods. This situation resulted in a significant rise of the unemployment rate of 3 to 5 employees on average. Considering this situation, it is recommended to foster financial and commercialization training opportunities for merchants in Nueva Loja, so that, they are better prepared to face the crisis and competition of their Colombian peers.
