Resumen
The objective of this study was focused on the development of a proposal focused on optimizing the control of the transportation system and traffic generated in different intersections located in the urban area of Santo Domingo city, with the purpose of enhancing circulation conditions during peak hours to reduce congestion and pollution levels. To do so, the main transportation and traffic characteristics were identified, based on the analysis of the current situation of 6 conflictive intersections located at entrances and exits of the city, through a field work and the direct observation, which allowed the installation of gauging points for volumetric counts during 7 consecutive days, over 12 hours (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.), and intervals of 15 minutes, in order to obtain a representative sample of traffic existing conditions in each access, focusing on the analysis of vehicle volumes, composition modality and directionality of traffic by approach, collected from capacity sheets, along with other tools for collecting information that allowed the analysis of the geometric characteristics of the roads, analysis of flows and regulation and control devices (horizontal -vertical- traffic lights), elements of great importance in the management and operation of circulation. The data obtained were analyzed using electronic sheets and the use of Vissim traffic simulation software, identifying hours and days of maximum demand, modal distributions, infrastructure and regulation mechanisms, to know saturation indicators to propose alternatives for improvement. It is concluded that the use of private vehicles is high, being the main cause of traffic congestion during peak hours. It is recommended to carry out studies of feasibility at certain intersections in order to optimize physical capacity and promote policies for the use of ecological transportation alternatives to reduce pollution.
