The present research is to determine the optimal location of reactive power compensators (DSTATCOM), through the implementation of the iterative forward-backward sweep method for power flows. The implemented algorithm considers minimizing the losses in the distribution system considering as a restriction that the voltage levels are within a certain margin. Similarly, the selection of candidate bars is done automatically by applying a search algorithm. Once the candidate bars have been determined, forward-backward sweep power flows are evaluated iteratively, in order to determine the location of the DSTATCOMs. For the modeling of this problem, two distribution systems are taken as a case study. The IEEE 33-node test system and a 59-node system proposed by the author are implemented. The analysis of the results is defined based on the inclusion of 3 and 4 compensators in the two systems or case studies.
