In the following paper, a comparative performance analysis of an optical communication system with PAM-4 modulation with and without dispersion pre-compensation is performed. This took place over a passive optical network (passive optical network - PON) through two scenarios: an experimental setup using real equipment and a simulation using Optsim. For both scenarios, the data generation and the digital signal processing (DSP) were performed off-line using Matlab ™. Data transmitted at 10 Gbaud/s, in an optical link of 20km and 45 km of G652D single-mode fiber, were received using a direct detection system photoreceptor. Experimental results show that there is a 1 dB penalty for achieving a goal BER of 10−3 when transmitting without dispersion pre-compensation.
