In this paper the modeling of a DC-DC converter and its respective control system was designed for fast charging an electric vehicle. This system unlike others in the market is independent from the grid and instead is supplied by a photovoltaic system.
The photovoltaic system was also designed to include a battery bank and to provide 15kWh per day. This energy can charge up to 50% capacity of an average electric vehicle in an hour. This design is intended to function as a road assistance system that helps a low charged vehicle to reach their destination or another charging point in their trip.
The converter was designed to meet the SAE standard criteria for a Level 1 DC charger which has a maximum output power of 36 kW at a nominal tension of 400 V. Due to high conversion ratio and high power specifications, the topology selected was an interleaved boost converter of two phases.
This design wasn’t physically implemented for the scope of this study therefore all tests were simulated using software tools like Matlab, Simulink and PSIM.
