Language Ideologies in Two Chilean Educational Institutions (1900-1930): a Glotopolitical Perspective

Abstract

In this investigation we analyze from a glotopolitical perspective the discourses published in the magazines of two prominent educational institutions between 1915 and 1931. Specifically, we refer to the University of Chile and the "Asociación de Educación Nacional", which we believe allows us to get a general picture of the intellectual climate of the period.

Form this background, we characterize the ideas about the language and language teaching contained in the corpus, with the purpose of establishing a link between these and the language ideologies that were circulating on the indicated period.

We conclude that the main ideology found corresponds to the standard language ideology, which had been present in the country at least since the late 19th century, but it is permeated in the corpus by the theorical and methodical innovations on the fields of linguistics and pedagogy. At the same time, we found different attitudes towards the standard language among the schoolteachers and academic intellectuals, which can be explained by paying attention to the social position of each group, since the first one manifested a clear intention of social transformation and stressed the importance of the pedagogical praxis and language to reach that goal.

La presente investigación analiza desde una perspectiva glotopolítica los discursos contenidos en dos revistas pertenecientes a instituciones relacionadas con el mundo educativo, durante los años 1900-1930. Nos referimos a la Universidad de Chile y la Asociación de Educación Nacional, las que, en conjunto, nos permiten tener un panorama general del clima intelectual de la época.

Con esto en mente, caracterizamos las distintas ideas sobre la lengua y su enseñanza contenidas en el corpus, con el objetivo final de relacionarlas con ideologías lingüísticas circulantes en el período.

A modo de conclusión, comprobamos el mantenimiento de algunas de las tendencias principales constatadas en el siglo anterior, pero adaptadas al nuevo contexto disciplinar y pedagógico. Junto a esto, se aprecian actitudes diferenciadas sobre la lengua estándar (y su enseñanza) entre las esferas universitarias y los maestros de escuela, lo que atribuimos principalmente a la posición socioeconómica de cada tipo de actor, en la medida en que los segundos postulan la práctica pedagógica como una herramienta para el cambio social, en donde la lengua llega a tomar un carácter central.
