Resumen
The objective of the study was to evaluate the benefit of implementing data assimilation in flow and hydrological state estimations in continental Chile. For this purpose, the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) coupled to the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrological model was implemented sequentially for each day with observations in the period 01/04/2000 - 31/03/2001 in 12 watersheds with low human intervention degree, located along a hydroclimatic gradient between 30°S and 37°S. The numerical experiments were designed based on the perturbation of the model forcings (i.e., precipitation, wind speed, temperature and relative humidity) and some initial states (soil moisture per layer and snow water equivalent), generating four different EnKF configurations. The results show that i) assimilating only runoff (Q) is not sufficient to ensure the decrease in the dispersion of other fluxes and states of the system. For example, assimilating only Q worsens on average for the 12 basins by 2% of the maximum SWE of the daily SWE estimates. In contrast, jointly assimilating Q, SWE and fSCA improves both Q and SWE AND fSCA. Consequently, the incorporation of different observations, oriented to quantify different processes, allows reducing the dispersion in the estimates associated to them and, thus, to the rest of the flows and states of the system; ii) The assimilation scheme allows, despite not having been designed for that purpose, to improve some spatial properties such as, for example, the variability ratio, spatial signal coincidence and correlation. These improvements are mainly observed in evapotranspiration and soil moisture in the root zone, variables that show improvements of up to 90% and 80%, respectively, in the Spearman variability ratio and correlation; and iii) Data assimilation has impacts on all state variables and simulated flows. The variables that show the greatest differences at the time of data assimilation correspond to model flows, including direct runoff (QD), baseflow (FB), evapotranspiration (ET), sublimation (SUB) and recharge (R), where FB is the one that exhibits the greatest differences with respect to the OL case. Finally, the present study opens the debate on the implications of data assimilation in the estimation of the water balance in basins with a snow component. At the same time, the need to evaluate the hydrological consistency of the assimilation results using non-assimilated observations and to improve the understanding of the a priori estimation - observation - a posteriori estimation relationship becomes evident.
