Resumen
Based on a collaborative experience with Mapuche groups in the city of Concepción, in central Chile, this article looks at the meaning and scope of Indigenous land claims in the urban milieu. As well as setting out the historical context underlying the Mapuche migration to Chile’s large cities, particular attention is paid to the migrants’ spatial practices and the symbolic forms of their appropriation of urban spaces. The analysis centres around the way that Mapuche society negotiates its urbanity, as the article attempts to understand how the city is integrated into Mapuche territorial geography.
