Resumen
This study is divided into two main parts. In the first, I unpack the extensive corpus
of customs records stored in Lima with the aim of documenting the musical life of the city
towards the end of the colonial period, as well as highlighting its role as a central hub for
music-related commerce with Europe and the rest of the Viceroyalty of Peru. This will
allow me to demonstrate that, at the very least from 1770 on, this capital city regularly
received instrumental music and musical instruments from the Old World, some of which
were later sent to other parts of the Viceroyalty.
In the second part, I will examine a piece of music composed around 1800 in an
attempt to determine the extent to which methods characteristic of European instrumental
music were incorporated in the music that was played in Lima (as well as in Santiago,
Chile, as we will later see).
However, before delving into the matter at hand, we must first consider the
historical context in order to better understand the musical aspects that will later be
examined.
