Resumen
This Action Research project was conducted in a school in Santiago, Chile, from the
necessity of helping ninth-grade students develop the intercultural competence in the foreign
language class (English as a foreign language) through politeness principles. In order to do so, a
qualitative approach was adopted where students were exposed to a first focus group followed by
an intervention; a set of activities focused on producing language, to promote the acknowledgment
of politeness patterns and the development of the intercultural competence skill. The success of the
intervention was measured by a second focus group, which was compared to the first one to draw
conclusions on students’ perceptions and the improvement of their intercultural skills.
