Resumen
Las vibrisas tienen funciones biológicas variadas (e.g. percepción táctil en entornos oscuros, detección de superficies de objetos, interacciones sociales). Además de las cefálicas, pueden estar distribuidas en diferentes regiones postcefálicas, donde las probabilidades de detección de estímulos (y sus consecuencias biológicas) sean mayores. Las vibrisas carpales están presentes en distintos grupos de mamíferos (e.g. marsupiales, roedores, carnívoros) y su desarrollo está vinculado con los hábitos de las especies. Aquí, describimos por primera vez la histomorfología de estas vibrisas en Chaetophractus vellerosus y las comparamos con las macro y microvibrisas faciales estudiadas previamente. Se tomaron muestras de ejemplares adultos, y se les practicaron técnicas histológicas de rutina e inmunohistoquímicas. Estas vibrisas carpales presentan una cápsula de tejido conectivo denso con fibras colágenas y reticulares. Internamente, y rodeando al folículo, se observa una vaina de tejido conectivo laxo (vaina mesenquimática) que emite trabéculas que alcanzan la cápsula y delimitan senos vasculares a modo de cuerpo cavernoso. En la zona del cuello del folículo está el cuerpo cónico con una glándula sebácea pequeña. Grandes haces de fibras nerviosas perforan la cápsula proximalmente y se ramifican en las trabéculas. Las vibrisas carpales están asociadas a fibras musculares lisas (musculatura intrínseca) que se extienden desde la parte proximal del folículo hasta la dermis superficial y entre cápsulas adyacentes. La estructura de las vibrisas carpales es similar a la de las macrovibrisas y, particularmente, la disposición de su musculatura lisa (intrínseca) es similar a la presente en las genales. En animales fosoriales, la presencia de vibrisas carpales podría estar asociada a la identificación de la estructura del sustrato donde cavan, permitiendo localizar sistemas de galerías previas (pero obliteradas), donde la velocidad de excavación pueda ser mayor (dada la soltura del sedimento), aumentando, escape ante predadores.
