Availability of alcohol outlets (AAO) is related to greater alcohol consumption and alcohol-related negative consequences. Cognitive variables (p.ej., perceived number of alcohol outlets or perceived availability [PAO]) are also related to alcohol consumption. Aims. We analyzed the association between AAO and PAO with a variety of alcohol outcomes (p.ej., alcohol consumption, alcohol-related negative consequences, purchase of alcohol in this outlets and money spent to buy alcohol inside and outside the residence area). Methods. College students aged 18-30 years old residents of Córdoba, Argentina, completed a computerized survey during 2015. AAO was determined with official data provided by the Secretary of Planning. Results. Among women, greater availability of alcohol (AAO and PAO) was significantly associated with the purchase of alcoholic beverages in these premises, alcohol consumption, number of alcohol-related negative consequences, and money spent to buy alcohol within the residence area. Among men, we only found a positive significant association between AAO and frequency of alcohol consumption whereas PAO and AAO were significantly associated with alcohol purchase in those places. Conclusions. Our findings, useful for the development of interventions to reduce alcohol consumption, indicate a differential sensitivity of me indicate a differential sensitivity of men and women to contextual and cognitive variables that regulate alcohol consumption.
