Resumen
Advanced micro and nano-material therapeutic systems exhibit several advantages over conventional therapeutic systems. Great progresses in the development of improved drug delivery systems (DDS), including lipid-based and polymer-based carriers, have been observed in the past decades. DDS attempt to improve the therapeutic effect of drugs mainly by controlling their release, which allows modifying the pharmacokinetics of drugs and diminishing their toxic and side effects. Targeted delivery of drugs to specific sites of action comprises a big challenge in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. In this scenario, this chapter aims to cover the main aspects regarding lipid-based and polymer-based carriers. Information concerning to their development and applications as therapeutic carriers for controlled drug release will be highlighted.
