Resumen
El uso de tomografías computadas y reconstrucción 3D está generando una revolución digital en la Paleontología. El resultado es un continuo y creciente interés en las interpretaciones paleoneurológicas y paleobiológicas asociadas, entre otras, a la forma encefálica y de los senos endocraneanos, y al desarrollo de los sentidos en distintos grupos de vertebrados. Esta novedosa información es relevante para reconocer nuevos caracteres potencialmente útiles en estudios filogenéticos. En el contexto de los mamíferos del Cenozoico sudamericano se realizaron numerosos (en algunos casos los primeros) moldes endocraneanos digitales en xenartros, notoungulados, litopternos, roedores caviomorfos y carnívoros prociónidos. Estas reconstrucciones 3D han permitido describir caracteres encefálicos, sensoriales, áreas neocorticales, grado de encefalización, estructura de los senos endocraneanos y deducir aspectos funcionales, sistemáticos y filogenéticos.
