Resumen
Juan Cruz Varela, considerado el representante por antonomasia del neoclasicismo argentino, compone en la década de 1820 dos tragedias, tituladas "Dido" y "Argia". La primera de ellas, dedicada a Bernardino Rivadavia, se basa en el episodio narrado en el libro IV de la Eneida de Virgilio. La importancia de esta tragedia -la primera que escribe Varela- se pone de manifiesto al hojear los periódicos más relevantes del momento. Tanto "El Argos de Buenos Aires" como "El Centinela", en sus ediciones de julio a septiembre de 1823, se hacen eco de la aparición de la pieza a través de textos de diverso tipo: anuncios breves, ya sean independientes o insertos en un artículo de mayor extensión referido a cuestiones varias; una crónica de las lecturas privadas o declamaciones de la que es objeto la tragedia; reseñas de la pieza; una "contestación" de las reseñas a cargo del autor de la obra; textos de réplica a dicha "contestación", incluidos los avisos previos sobre la publicación de la respuesta. Tanto las reseñas como las respuestas forman parte de la polémica propiamente dicha en torno a "Dido", que analizaremos en este trabajo. El resto de los textos, en tanto podrían considerarse satélites de la polémica, y constituyen asimismo un elemento necesario para abordar la recepción de la obra en la prensa.
