Resumen
Los pejerreyes de Argentina, tanto continentales como marinos pertenecen a la familia Atherinopsidae (pejerreyes del nuevo mundo), género Odontesthes, y poseen entre si un alto grado de similitud morfológica (de forma), genética (especialmente para el caso de las especies continentales) y funcional: entre sus características compartidas figura el hecho que todos presentan una modalidad de desove múltiple o parcelado, en donde en sus gónadas (ovarios) existen oocitos (huevos) en distintas fases de crecimiento. Dichas camadas oocitarias son expulsadas espaciadas en el tiempo (puestas parciales) a lo largo del período de desove en su ciclo anual. De esta manera, una hembra adulta puede efectuar reiterados desoves (espaciados en un par de semanas entre uno y otro) a los largo de la época de puesta anual. Los huevos de estas especies son generalmente bentónicos, agrupados en racimos, y se fijan entre sí y al sustrato por medio de unos zarcillos denominados filamentos coriónicos. Sus especies son muy importantes desde el punto de vista socio-económico, ya que sustentan pesquerías artesanales, recreativas, deportivas y por su utilización en acuicultura. Los pejerreyes que habitan en el Mar Argentino se distribuyen desde el sur de Brasil hasta el Canal de Beagle e Islas Malvinas en Argentina. Se encuentran representados por cinco especies. Tradicionalmente han sido ubicados en dos grupos, uno con las especies bonaerenses-norpatagónicas (Odontesthes argentinensis, O. platensis y O. incisa), y el grupo patagónico (Odontesthes smitti y O. nigricans), solapándose su distribución en los Golfos Norpatagónicos (Golfos San Matías, San José y Nuevo).
