Resumen
La domesticación de los animales, así como el cultivo de las plantas han permitido una de las transiciones socioeconómicas más importante de la historia de la humanidad. El conocimiento sobre los procesos de evolución de las especies domésticas nos brinda una mejor perspectiva para comprender las diferentes sociedades humanas. Además, esta información tiene una gran importancia al momento de tomar una decisión en el manejo y conservación de los recursos genéticos animales y vegetales de dichas especies. Tradicionalmente, la historia demográfica y evolutiva de las especies domésticas ha sido analizada mediante estudios antropológicos y arqueológicos. Es por esta razón que las hipótesis sobre donde y cuando se produjeron los eventos de domesticación se han basado inicialmente en datos arqueozoológicos, así como en las características morfológicas de las actuales especies y razas domésticas. Sin embargo, recientemente, el uso de los marcadores genéticos ha comenzado a tener un gran impacto en nuestro conocimiento sobre la domesticación. En el presente capítulo se analizarán los principales trabajos realizados durante las últimas décadas sobre el origen y domesticación de las principales especies domésticas. Específicamente, se discutirá como dichos estudios han incrementado nuestro conocimiento sobre el proceso de domesticación, permitiendo la identificación de los ancestros salvajes (especies, subespecies o poblaciones), y de esta forma dilucidar la localización geográfica y temporal de los eventos de domesticación, así como la naturaleza de la expansión de las poblaciones de animales domésticos durante los últimos milenios. Por último, se describirán y compararán los niveles de diversidad genética presente en las poblaciones de vacas, búfalos, caballos, burros, cerdos, ovejas, cabras, camélidos sudamericanos y perros en diferentes escalas geográficas, así como también se discutirán como los patrones de variabilidad genética de estas especies han sido influenciados por la dinámica poblacional, el flujo génico, los procesos de selección, etc.
