Resumen
Plantas terrestres, palustres, saxícolas, raramente epífitas o hemiepífitas. Rizomas rastreros, erectos u oblicuos, a veces arborescentes, estoloníferos, dictiostélicos, cubiertos de escamas anchas o aciculares, no clatradas, en algunos casos protegidos por las bases foliares persistentes. Frondes polísticas a raramente distanciadas, monomórficas, subdimórficas o dimórficas. Pecíolos delgados a robustos, en general surcados dorsalmente, glabros, con escamas, pelos o ambos, no articulados al rizoma, con varios haces vasculares, generalmente organizados en forma de U. Láminas pinnatífidas a pinnadas, raramente enteras o bipinnadas, en algunos casos con pinnas basales reducidas, herbáceas, coriáceas, subcoriáceas, papiráceas o membranáceas, glabras, pilosas ocon escamas sobre la costa. Pinnas opuestas, subalternas o alternas, adnatas, sésiles o brevemente pecioluladas, a veces con base auriculada; venas libres, simples a furcadas, o anastomosadas formando aréolas sin venas inclusas, en las pinnas fértiles con una vena comisural subcostal a submarginal. Cenosoros continuos o interrumpidos ubicados hacia ambos lados de la costa, de posición costal, medios, submarginales o marginales. Indusios bien desarrollados abiertos hacia la costa, escariosos, glabros o pilosos, margen entero, subentero, papiloso, eroso o fimbriado-lacerado. Esporas monoletes, con perisporio liso a irregularmente granulado,papilado o rugulado, generalmente plegado. Gametofitos fotosintéticos, cordados.
