Resumen
Familia con aproximadamente 240 géneros y cerca de 7000 especies, de distribución cosmopolita, ausente en latitudes altas. Para la Argentina la familia comprende 31 géneros y 117 especies y taxones infraespecíficos. Algunas especies son de gran importancia por sus aceites esenciales y se cultivan en la región como hierbas medicinales o culinarias. Entre las más importantes están: Melissa officinalis L., nativa del sur de Europa, y especies de Mentha y Salvia. Por otro lado, por sus usos ornamentales se cultivan numerosas especies de Salvia. De los 10 taxones específicos o subespecíficos que existen en SJ, 5 son nativos y 5 adventicios.
