Synapsida es uno de los grandes grupos que se reconocen entre los amniotas, y se encuen-tran ya definidos en el mismo momento que se reconocen los primeros amniotas, es decir en el Carbonífero (hace aproximadamente unos 300 millones de años). En el Triásico Superior, apro-ximadamente hace unos 210 millones de años, aparecen los que muchos autores, principalmen-te paleontólogos, definen como mamíferos basales (mamaliaformes de Rowe, 1988) con una morfología craneal y del esqueleto muy próxima a la de algunos representantes de los mamífe-ros más modernos. En la actualidad, los sinápsidos se encuentran representados exclusivamente por los mamíferos. Esto implica que no existieron formas intermedias entre lo que conocemos como reptiles y los mamíferos, dado que el camino evolutivo de los sinápsidos (que finalmente incluyen a los mamíferos) se produjo de manera totalmente independiente del de los restantes amniotas (donde están incluidos los reptiles). Todos los grupos incluidos dentro de los sinápsidos se caracterizan por presentar en el crá-neo una abertura temporal inferior, ubicada por detrás de la órbita. Ésta se reconoce al quedar limitada ventralmente por el escamosal y el yugal y dorsalmente por el postorbital y el escamo-sal. Esta abertura se expande notablemente y migra dorsalmente en los representantes más tardíos del grupo (gorgonospios, terocéfalos, cinodontes y mamíferos). Dos grandes grupos son generalmente reconocidos entre los sinápsidos: pelicosaurios y te-rápsidos. Los primeros registros de pelicosaurios son del Carbonífero Superior y sus represen-tantes no pasan el fin del Paleozoico. El grupo se encuentra mayormente representado en Lau-rasia (hemisferio norte), pero algunos representantes son también conocidos en Sudáfrica (Botha-Brink y Modesto, 2007). También se describieron vértebras aisladas atribuidas a pelico-saurios en el Pérmico Superior/Triásico Inferior de Uruguay (Pinheiro et al., 2003), pero su asignación a dicho grupo ha sido discutida (Dias-da Silva et al., 2006). Pelicosauria es un grupo parafilético dado que algunos de sus representantes (específicamente los esfenacodóntidos, Figura 301) son reconocidos como grupo hermano de los terápsidos (Rubidge y Sidor, 2001; Benson, 2012). Los pelicosaurios incluyen los primeros carnívoros terrestres de gran tamaño, de los cuales Dimetrodon del Carbonífero-Pérmico de Estados Unidos es la forma más popular. En este taxón ya existen las primeras evidencias de heterodoncia ya que presentan una zona del maxilar y de la mandíbula que suele denominarse como área de caninización, en la cual los dien- tes son notablemente mayores. También presentan espinas neurales vertebrales de gran altura en las vértebras dorsales que forman una estructura conocida como vela. Estas prolongaciones son interpretadas como el sostén de una piel delgada muy vascularizada, que les permitiría ca- lentar o enfriar el cuerpo rápidamente (dirigiendo la vela perpendicular o paralelamente a los rayos del sol). Pelicosaurios herbívoros de gran tamaño, los edafosaurios, también desarrollaron estructuras derivadas de las espinas vertebrales para el sostén de la vela convergentemente a aquellas de Dimetrodon.
