En la presente tesis doctoral se estudiaron ambos procesos de biorreducción- oxidación y biosorción de uranio, para especies bacterianas acidófilas, no utilizadas hasta el momento, en los procesos antes mencionados, y especies fúngicas resistentes de ocurrencia ambiental, respectivamente.
En primera instancia se estudió la resistencia a altas concentraciones de metal y capacidad reductora de uranio(VI) por las especies acidófilas y litoquimioautótrofas: Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans y Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.
En segunda instancia se estudió la capacidad de retención de uranio por dos especies fúngicas ambientales, resistentes a uranio y a condiciones de elevada acidéz: Acremonium sp. y Aphanocladium sp.
Ambas metodologías estudiadas en esta tesis, bioprecipitación y biosorción, son potencialmente aplicables para separar compuestos solubles de uranio en cursos de agua y en efluentes líquidos (como el drenaje ácido de minas); o en suelos y sedimentos, evitando la migración hasta acuíferos y su contaminación.
