The in vitro antioxidant activity of adult and young leaf extracts of T. heptaphylla (Vell.) Toledo ("ipê-roxo") were evaluated by the inhibition of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) formation induced by three different free radical generators, H2O2, FeSO4 and AAPH, on a lipid-rich substrate. The presence of different constituents in the crude extract was established by TLC, showing the presence of flavonoids. Young and old leaves showed an inhibitor effect on lipid peroxidation induced by H2O2 and FeSO4 in concentrations of 2, 20 and 200 μg/mL and 2 and 20 mg/mL, respectively.
