Entre noviembre de 1838 y febrero de 1839, George Sand viaja por la isla de Mallorca en compañía de sus hijos y del músico Frédéric Chopin. Da cuenta de este suceso en el relato Un invierno en Mallorca publicado primeramente por entregas y finalmente como volumen en 1842. El mismo se inicia con una dedicatoria titulada “Carta de un ex viajero a un amigo sedentario" en la que la autora pondera los viajes imaginarios por sobre aquellos reales y físicos. Llama la atención que, al presentar su relato, la escritora viajera prefiera la quietud al traslado y la imaginación a la experiencia. Intentaremos demostrar que la imaginación ocupa en el texto mayor espacio que el viaje propiamente dicho.George Sand travelled around the island of Majorca in the company of her children and the musician Frédéric Chopin between november 1838 and february 1839. She gives an account of this event in her travel novel Winter in Majorca published first as newspaper serial and finally as a volume in 1842. It begins with a dedication entitled "Letter from a former traveller to a sedentary friend" in which the author ponders the imaginary trips over real and physical ones. It is striking that, when presenting her story, the traveling writer prefers stillness to movement and imagination to experience.
