dc.description | Paratuberculosis is chronic granulomatous enteritis that affects ruminants. Clinical signs in bovine are characterised by progressive symptoms associated with chronic intermittent diarrhoea, submandibular oedema, progressive loss of weight, emaciation and animal death. Susceptibility to infection is highest in animals under 30 days old, but clinical disease does not usually develop in cattle until 2-5 years of age. The main mode of transmission within herds is through ingestion of faecal contaminated milk. Subclinical overcomes the clinical cases thoroughly and they represent a diagnostic challenge. Effective treatments are not known; the vaccines are not approved because they sensitise the animals to the immunological based diagnostic tests. Available reports had shown that the serological prevalence is on the increase in Argentina. The efficiency of various methods and with different antigens was evaluated in sera of animals from naturally infected herds. True prevalences were determined by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis isolation and by intracutaneous tests depending in each case of animals age.
